This evening, at her first appearance for Redbridge Music Society, Pamela Hay will be singing some popular operatic arias, songs from the musicals and also some popular and comedy songs. Pamela recently appeared on BBC Radio 3 with the BBC Scottish Orchestra and has also featured several times as a guest-soloist on Radio 2’s long-running Friday Night is Music Night. Tonight Pamela will be accompanied by the esteemed pianist Michael Pugh.
PAMELA HAY – SOPRANO
Polish-American soprano Pamela Hay received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, Baltimore, and her Postgraduate Certificate from the Royal College of Music, London. She won scholarships to the Aspen Music Festival and the Internationale Sommerakademie Mozarteum Salzburg and has been the recipient of a number of Voice Awards.
She has given solo recitals at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Salzburg, Belgium and Costa Rica. She had a featured role in Guy Ritchie’s recent film Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. She has given solo recitals at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Salzburg, Belgium and Costa Rica and recently made her debut as soloist with the Hallé Orchestra.
Pamela played leading lady Mimi in the 2011 Olivier Award-winning production of La Bohème at the Soho Theatre. The many opera companies she has sung for include Opera Holland Park, English Pocket Opera Company, Buxton Opera House, Iford Opera Festival, Cambridge Handel Opera Group, Wigmore Hall Education, Opera UK, and Royal Opera House’s OperaGenesis. She has played over 30 roles in opera and musical theatre across two continents. Other leading roles she has performed include Gretel (Hansel and Gretel), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Nedda (Pagliacci), Pamina (Magic Flute), Norina (Don Pasquale), Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice), the title role La voix humaine, title role Merry Widow, Yum-Yum (The Mikado), Rosmene (leading lady) Handel’s Imeneo, Anne Page (The Merry Wives of Windsor), and Ellen (Lakmé). Pamela has worked frequently in the theatre, performing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in roles specially written for her voice. Most recently Pamela was cast by Jonathan Church and Theatre Royal Bath/Chichester Festival for the national tour of Tony award-winning play Master Class, playing Sharon Graham opposite Stephanie Beacham. Pamela is the voice of mobile phone network Orange in their online campaign for their HD Voice service, and has a featured role in Guy Ritchie’s recent film Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.
MICHAEL PUGH – PIANO
After studying at The Royal Academy of Music, RSAMD and the GSMD, Michael came to international prominence by being the first British Pianist in it’s history to be awarded the Prix D’Or at the Arrau International Piano Competition in Switzerland.
As a soloist his performances have captivated audiences in the UK and abroad, from London to Osaka, collaborating with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Alexander Madjur, Mikael Stronman , Marin Alsop and Alexander Briger. As a collaborative artist he has appeared in London at St John’s Smith Square, the Southbank Centre and the Wigmore Hall and abroad at the Salzburg Fest, Meganhoffen Festspiel, Amici di Toscana Florence, Milan, Venezia, Montepulciano, Siena and Tonhalle Zurich.
Media activities have included live broadcasts for : BBC radio , NKH Japan , Funen TV Denmark, Rai 3 Italy, ARVO Dutch TV and LWT in the UK. His discography includes work for Miramax Films , Sony and EMI.
In 2012 Michael joined the staff of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama
